ProMusica Arizona Brings the Music of AESOP’S Fables to the Third Grade
The ProMusica Arizona Chorale and Orchestra, in partnership with the Arts Council of the North Valley’s “Right Brain Train” docent program, launched a music workshop this month in the third grade classes at Gavilan Peak Elementary School called “Training the Brain with Fables.” Mr. Kozacek has chosen and arranged six of the most popular “Aesop’s Fables in Songs” by George Mysel for the workshops as children are drawn to the easily understood stories, messages, and morals that are taught in verse. Instrumentalists from PMAZ introduce students to the various sounds made by a flute, horn, and string quartet and their significance in telling a story. In addition, the workshops introduce young singers to singing with orchestral instrument accompaniment and choral vocal backup. As a special bonus, all of the third graders participating in these workshops can sing in PMAZ’s May 16 and 17 concerts, “Family Fun Fables and Tall Tales.” This family-friendly concert is the perfect chance for parents and grandparents to introduce children to orchestra and choral music linked to children’s classic literature. The three concerts will be held on Friday May 16th at 7:30 PM and Saturday May 17th at 2 PM and 7:30 PM at the Boulder Creek High School Performing Arts Center in Anthem and are sponsored by West Valley Pediatric Dentistry and USAA. Tickets are available online at www.promusicaaz.org T Call 623-465-4650

The Little Gym of Anthem Open House
The Little Gym of Anthem hosted an Open House on Saturday March 8th. Alex Bingham and Jenn Plaisance, the new owners of The Little Gym since September 2007, were excited to host this event. “It was a lot of fun and we enjoyed meeting new families and allowing them to see for themselves how spectacular our program really is,” owner Alex Bingham shared. “The best part was seeing how much fun the parents had in the gym,” stated owner Jenn Plaisance. Parents and children were introduced to several class elements from each of The Little Gym’s programs including; Parent/Child, Pre-School, Grade School, and Dance. Refreshments and prizes were given and every guest received a The Little Gym t-shirt. During the event parents were given the opportunity to schedule a free trial visit and members that attended were able to priority enroll for summer camps and classes. “We look forward to hosting an open house or similar event every semester. It is open house events like these that allow us the opportunity to prove ourselves to the community and show that we are an exceptional program and have made positive change!” T 623.551.2337

Spotlight On Arizona Doctors Behind New Life Saving CPR Technique
The prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) is shining the national spotlight on a new life saving technique for out of hospital cardiac arrest developed in Arizona. The March 12 issue of JAMA features a study by an Arizona team led by Dr. Bentley Bobrow, Medical Director of the Arizona Department of Health Services’ Bureau of EMS & Trauma System. The study focuses on Cardiocerebral Resuscitation or “CCR,” a cutting edge alternative to standard paramedic resuscitation developed at The University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center. The report in JAMA, one of the world’s foremost medical journals, showed survival rates following out of hospital cardiac arrest increased three-fold when emergency medical personnel used CCR, which focuses on continuous chest compressions and delays placement of a breathing tube. “Out of hospital cardiac arrest is a major public health problem and a leading cause of death,” the Arizona authors wrote. “In 2004, the average survival of patients with out of hospital cardiac arrest was three percent in the state of Arizona. We encourage all emergency medical providers to evaluate their survival rates and, if they are not satisfactory, to institute Cardiocerebral Resuscitation and see if it improves survival,” says Gordon A. Ewy, MD, who co-authored the JAMA article. The three-year study includes data from sixty-two Arizona EMS agencies. It evaluated 886 individuals with cardiac arrest; of those, 218 occurred before CCR training and only four survived. After the training, survival rates jumped markedly: Of 668 individuals studied, thirty-six survived. T www.jamamedia.org

Congressman John Shadegg Explains Plans for the Upcoming Election
Congressman John Shadegg announced his intention to leave Congress at the end of his current term. He said, “Serving in the United States Congress on behalf of the people of Arizona is the single greatest privilege in my professional life. Deciding not to run again was very difficult. My decision was based on my devotion to my family and my obligations to help them achieve their dreams and aspirations. Representing the people of Arizona in the U.S. Congress is a huge honor and privilege and one I did not want to give up, but I felt I should. I expected my decision would elicit little reaction here in Arizona, and less in Washington. The events of the last week have, to say the least, stunned and deeply humbled me. My decision was made after deep reflection and consultation with my family. It was entirely a personal decision between me and my family. The reactions of my constituents and my friends now suggest there were implications far broader than we had contemplated. Ten days ago, I noted that as a nation we face “huge challenges” and that “my passion for the cause of freedom is as strong as ever.” The personal factors which led to my initial decision are very real and very important. My family has encouraged and supported my public service and they have sacrificed to allow me to serve the state and nation we all love. In discussing the reaction of my constituents to my decision, we have determined as a family that we are willing to continue to make these sacrifices because the cause is so worthwhile. Serving the people of Arizona in the Congress is a tremendous honor and privilege. With the support of my wife, Shirley, my children, Courtney and Stephen, and with the support of the voters of the 3rd Congressional District in November, I will continue to fight for them and to uphold Conservative principles in United States House of Representatives. Therefore, I will campaign for re-election and will continue to fight in Congress for economic prosperity, human rights, personal freedom, and individual responsibility.

Baci
When the owners of Baci visited Tuscany, Italy, they knew they had found their inspiration for the restaurant they would someday own.
The relaxed ambiance and stylish comfort of the décor draws in patrons, and the menu keeps them coming back. Don’t be fooled by the Tuscany-inspired décor, though, the menu is not all Italian. Baci serves Halibut, Mahi Mahi, Veal Chops, and Rack of Lamb on a regular basis. A “must have” on the menu is the Portobello Mushroom, stuffed with Shrimp, Scallops, and Breadcrumbs, and drizzled with Balsamic Vinegar is, alone, worth going for. There are two new reasons to drop by and check out Baci, if you haven’t yet done so: they are running two specials: an “Early Bird Special” and a “Bring Three, Eat Free Special” The early birds who arrive at Baci between 4 and 5:30 PM on any night of the week will get an entrée, glass of wine, and house salad for $21.95. Also, if you bring three guests with you, the lowest-priced meal at your table will be free.
Mother’s Day will be celebrated at Baci in a special way this year, with a Mother’s Day brunch (see ad for details.)

Gratitude for A.K. Tae Kwon Do
I feel compelled to write this letter on behalf of A.K. Tae Kwon Do in Anthem. Their story and the impact they are having on both children and adults is worthy of being spotlighted. However both Sarah Lee and Master Sun Youn are so very modest and humble. Therefore allow me, a parent of children involved in their school and a mom involved in their Mom’s Ultimate Challenge - to lift them up. Master Sun Youn and Sarah Lee have started a small revolution to inspire adults and children into the sport. They initiated the concept of a training program just for moms called “Mom’s Ultimate Challenge.” It is geared for all shapes, sizes, ages, and staminas. Master Youn teaches all classes and “takes no prisoners” until the goal is achieved, but presents it in a calm, encouraging, and no-nonsense atmosphere. He and Sarah care so much for our children’s achievements as well as our own. Master Youn’s story and background are extraordinary. He is a former Korean National Champion (many times over) and trained the Elite Corps/Special Ops of the Korean National Army. He is so admired by his students and even the youngest child strives to meet his satisfaction. He and Sarah also work with children with special needs. A quote from one of the parents, Heidi Bonaroti, says it all; “Using the art of Tae Kwon Do, Master Youn has a way of facilitating the kids to focus. I have noticed he uses a variety of ways that are key when interacting with a child who has special needs. He not only uses a verbal cue, but he makes close, direct eye contact with the child and if necessary, he will use physical prompts to guide them into the activity. As an occupational therapist and mother of a child with Autism, I see his approach as authentic, individualized, and purposeful. The result is the child being more aware of his/her surroundings, improving his/her own body awareness, increasing self-confidence, understanding the goal of the activities, and even perhaps making a new friend. We are very fortunate to have Master Youn on our child’s journey and I count it a privilege to know him.” Letter submitted by Kim Landry.

Learning Express Donates to the Family of Chris Carson
Jeff Morgan, owner of Learning Express, a toy store located in Anthem, donated twenty percent of the store’s sales on Friday, February 29th to the family of Chris Carson.
Carson was the family’s sole breadwinner before his accident in October. The community of Anthem has donated time, services and money to help Carson, his wife Kendra and their two-year-old daughter Shelby. “When bad things happen to good people, I feel I should help out,” Morgan said. “This is one of the little things I can do to help my community.”
Kendra Carson says that community efforts like the one at Learning Express are sustaining the family right now. “We would be completely alone without the community’s support. I want people to know how appreciative we are.”Although Morgan does not know any members of the Carson family, he is no stranger to the struggles they are enduring. Twelve years ago Morgan suffered from leukemia and had to undergo a bone marrow transplant. He has since physically recovered, but says that he would be worse off today if not for the support his friends, family and community have provided him. Their efforts inspired him to do the same for others. Carson’s wife says that attitudes like Morgan’s are pervasive in Anthem, and that she and her family feel blessed to live in such a community.”When tragedy happens, we don’t even know these people and they want to help,” Kendra said. “I would never live anywhere else.” Morgan deposited his donation into the Wells Fargo account the family set up after the accident. Anyone interested in helping the family can contribute to account number 6452-472340 at any Wells Fargo branch.

Community Event Raises Over $3000 for Anthem Resident
Tony Bouie, Anthem resident, was diagnosed with stage four Lymphoma. The disease has spread throughout his body and to his bones. He has already undergone two chemotherapy treatments in Tucson and will be receiving his third shortly. Tony is thirty-five years old and has two little girls, ages three and one. Obviously, families are not prepared for this type of news, emotionally or financially. On Saturday, March 8th, the community rallied together to hold a fundraiser event at Off The Hook for Tony and his family. The event included a fashion show hosted by Off The Hook, Hedz Salon, and Mode Boutique as well as a silent auction. Attendees received discounts to local businesses, gives-a-ways, and prizes. 100 percent of the proceeds went to the We Care for Tony Bouie Fund, to help his family with the seemingly never-ending medical expenses.

Anthem Blood Drive at Hester Family Chiropractic
Hester Family Chiropractic has partnered with United Blood Services and is hosting a Blood Drive on Saturday, April 19, 2008. All of the blood donated to United Blood Services stays in the Phoenix area to help those in need. Blood is used to save lives! Medical advances and modern surgical techniques, such as cancer treatments, organ transplants, and open heart surgery, have increased the need for blood. Depending on patients’ needs, your blood may be separated into several different components, which may be used to treat a variety of medical conditions or illnesses. Please understand that there are two types of donations. There is a whole blood donation which is a normal donation and then there is a power red donation. A power red donation can have twice the impact of regular whole blood donations. Because donors receive their other blood components back, United Blood Services is able to draw twice the amount of red blood cells as a regular blood donation. This process of giving a double donation rebuilds the blood supply at a much faster rate. Generally, the power red donation experience is more comfortable than other donations because you receive most of your fluids back. Your plasma (which contains water and minerals) is returned to your body with a small amount of saline solution. You leave the donation chair more hydrated than when you started! This usually requires about thirty extra minutes. Females must be at least 5’5” and 150 lbs. and males must be 5’1” and 130 lbs for the power red donation. Thank you in advance for helping make this blood drive a success for our community! For more information visit www.unitedbloodservices.org
